Alabama Book Festival Offers Fun for the Whole Family

MONTGOMERY, Ala.—While mom and dad will enjoy hearing from some of their favorite authors and scholars at the fifth annual Alabama Book Festival on April 17, a host of children’s activities is sure to make the free public event a day of fun for the whole family.

This year’s lineup of participating children’s and young adult authors is sponsored the Alabama State Council on the Arts’ “Support the Arts” license tag grant program. Meeting a “real-life” author is often a formative experience for children. The following authors will be reading from their works and signing books:

Alabama Public Television has organized a number of educational activities to promote reading and literacy, including visits from PBS Kids Raising Readers characters Super Why, DUCK from Word World, and Between the Lions’ cub Leona. Each child will be provided with a free book at the Go Fish for Books booth, a Hand-in-Paw service dog will lend a fuzzy ear to those who want to practice their reading, and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts will assist with bookmark making and other arts and crafts. The winners of the PBS Kids Go Writers’ Contest will also be announced during the event. Children in grades K-3 may enter the contest online through March 26 at http://pbskids.org/writerscontest/.

Sponsors for the Alabama Book Festival include the Alabama Humanities Foundation, Alabama Library Association, Alabama Public Television, Alabama State Council on the Arts, Alabama Writers’ Forum, Capitol Book and News, Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities at Auburn University, City of Montgomery, LWT Communications, Montgomery City-County Library System, New South Books, Old Alabama Town/Landmarks Foundation, Regions Bank, River City Publishing, and Troy State University-Montgomery.
